Weekend Approaching

Well, I just typed a blog and got booted off twice. Let's see if it works this time.

Can't believe it's already Friday. A member in my group and I are in charge of cooking tonight for my group, so I'll have to head back soon. A few of us walked a few miles to get here and need enough time to get back to prepare dinner. My group will be heading off early to Victoria Falls, but I will be staying behind. There's talk about going out dancing tonight with San Jose State and UNZA students, so we shall see what the night brings.....I'm hoping for at least a shower. I haven't had one in a couple days. We didn't have water yesterday or this morning. Luckily, I was able to wash a bit of clothes out by hand before the water went out. I got word that UNZA is out water for the next couple days. Ouch! I'm holding up just fine, though.

The weather here is great! It's been very pleasant during the day and a bit chilly at night. I'm beginning to learn the local language here, Nyanja. I had my first language lesson yesterday. Our teacher at Kondwa was fabulous. We've been practicing a bit. We often butcher the language, but we have a great sense of humor about it all. My group is really great! Did I already mention that??

I hope to blog more early next week, if not sooner. I'm looking forward to reporting back what occurred during the time with the girls I'll be working with next week. I'm looking forward to it. I can really see myself living here, even if for just a short time. I'd like to spend more time here learning the local language and helping the communities, particularly the orphans and the teachers in the community. Who knows?

Laurie (AKA –Red)..It's Zakiya. Praise God! I am so happy to know that you are enjoying yourself so far. I am also thrilled to hear that you are able to see some of the same kids. Even though I have not met them YET...I feel as if I already know them because of all the pictures I have seen and from your stories. Please tell them all that I said hello. It sounds like you are having so much fun out there. Did you get to go dancing?...I love the part on your bog where you said, "Next summer I hope of my of friends can come." Yes, yes, and yes I cannot wait to come. Just to give you a little update. We (at church) have about 3 boxes of clothes, a box of toys, pencils, and some other things ready to be sent. Darius and I checked into shipping and so far with UPS and FedEx they are quoting us b/w $250-$500/box. UPS does not ship to Konwanda. So what we are doing is looking into some other means of shipping. We have another church member checking today (Sat. 7-21) and will let me know tomorrow (Sun. 7-22). Before you leave I want to make sure you get the photo album. If you can will you let me know the closest city to ship to if we are not able to ship into Konwanda? Also, if the items we are sending do not arrive until after you leave who should we send it to?

Laurie, you will be so pleased to know that Darius, one of his friends, Sis. C, and I are looking into starting a non profit. We have lots of ideas and one if them is to continue working/partnering with the orphanage and one day sending some of our kids out there….I will tell you all about it when you return. God is good… 

Tomorrow (Sun. 7-22) I am going to make an announcement at church to give them and update of your work and your need for financial assistance for supplies. Also, we have a couple of projects we (the Children’s Church) are doing to raise more funds to cover our shipping cost. One is “Rent a Kid” where one can hire a child from our church to do work – i.e. cut the grass, wash the car, etc. The other is selling Christian T-shirts. Are kids are on a roll! Demetrius still asks if he can come out there. Actually everyone at church asks where I am going next. I guess I should tell them AFRICA! Hehe!

Well Laurie we all love you and are continuing to pray for you. Thank you for letting God do this wonderful work in and through you. I will keep you posted on the shipping and if you could just get back to me regarding the two questions. I look forward to hearing all about your trip.

Love ya

Response to Zakiya:

Hey girl! Thanks so much for your prayers. I really appreciate it! Yes, can't wait to partner here in Africa next summer.

By the way, it's not Konwanda, so that explains why they don't ship here. It's called Kondwa Day Centre (spelled exactly that way). The address is
PO Box 33652
Lusaka, Zambia

Thanks so much for everything, Z! Hope you are enjoying your summer!
